From Economics to Marine Conservation

As an Economics student the world of marine biology is about as far away to me as Egypt is to Glasgow. However for 6 weeks in the summer I will be swapping statistics and graphs to get my hands dirty with marine research as I head out to Egypt with the rest of the research team. Being from a different subject background to the rest of the team was always going to be a challenge but despite this I had no second thoughts in applying for such an exciting and promising expedition.

The prospect of doing valuable research in a part of the world that fascinates me greatly is enough to expel any worries about being a fish out of water! My involvement in the socio-economic fisheries aspect will take me beyond the confinements of my degree course and this is what appeals to me most as I look forward to what is going to be a fantastic summer!!
